Stuart Nicholson was one of my favorite teachers. I used to draw him flying back from Mexico in a jet loaded with contraband and place it on his desk unsigned, but he always knew I did it even 50 years later. He had us read the Sunday editorial pages and gave us a ten question quiz each Monday. We acted out scenes from American history and mine was the ultimate assassination of President James Abram Garfield on July 2, 1818 at the Baltimore and Potomac depot using the recorded sound effects of the two shots. I did an "illustrated" book report on the Great Gatsby that caused his Vanderbilt Student Teacher to ask me if I wanted to become a writer. My final term paper was the history of the Army Air Force. I liked him very much and i'm pretty sure he liked me too.
