Deloris Marie Lockett Powell (“Dee”), the 4th of 5 children, was born August 4, 1936 in Gulfport, MS to the late James H. Locket, Sr. and Ethel Berry Lockett. At a very early age, Deloris accepted Christ and was baptized at Morning Star Baptist Church in Gulfport, MS. After graduating as valedictorian, from Thirty-Third Avenue High School in 1955, Dee attended Tugaloo College and received her bachelor’s degree. While at Tugaloo, she married her childhood sweetheart, Archie Lineal Powell, Jr. To this union were born three children – Rita Gayle, Gerald Anthony, and Jeffrey O’Neal. The family settled in Nashville, TN, where Dee and Archie reached their respective life-long dreams of becoming a teacher and Medical Doctor of Pathology. Dee was a relatively private person, living her life as a devoted wife, loving mother, and a dedicated educator. After retiring early from a very successful career as both an English Teacher and a Guidance Counselor in the Metro Public School System, Dee loved to play bridge, and spent quality time at the family home in Gulfport, MS with both friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Lockett, Sr. and Ethel Locket; two (2) brothers, James Jr. and Aulton; one (1) sister, Alpha Lockett George and her husband Archie L. Powell, MD. She leaves to cherish her memory: one (1) daughter, Rita, two (2) sons, Gerald (Annie), Jeffrey (Wanda), one (1) sister, Delbrah Buford, Gulfport, MS; five (5) grandchildren: Eric Powell, Brittany Mitchell, Chase Powell, Devon Powell, Lineal Powell; (3) great grandchildren, Ty Powell, Zachery Powell and Zavier Powell and a host of nieces and nephews, as well as, other relatives and friends. Dee’s Lasting Memories: Archie, her devoted husband: “He was very shy, very smart, and very handsome…the love of my life!” James Locket, Sr.: “My dad taught me the value of time, keeping one’s promises, one’s integrity, and learning.” Ethel Locket: “My mom taught me pride, appearance, the value of a good education and high morals.” The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, May 8 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5110 Gallatin Road in Nashville. The funeral service will be on Monday, May 9 at 12:00 pm also at the funeral home with one hour of visiting time prior to the service. The committal service will immediately follow, via an escorted cortege, at Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 7931 McCrory Lane in Nashville.
