Allan Anthony Barrow Sr's Obituary
Allan Anthony “Coach” Barrow, Sr., 70, of Mount Juliet, Tennessee, died on Sunday, October 5, 2025 at Tristar Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tennessee surrounded by family.
Allan was born in 1955 and raised in Harlem, New York. In 1974, he applied to the Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, just five years after African-Americans first began attending the institution. He was accepted and majored in English while playing on the freshman basketball team. In 1975, Allan joined the United States Navy. His career included assignments to Fighter Squadron 24 (VF-24), USS Constellation (CV-24), and USS Wainwright (CG-28). Allan was promoted to Chief Petty Officer in 1988 and retired as the Zone Supervisor for Navy Recruiting District Memphis in 1996.
Following his Navy retirement, Allan attended the University of Memphis and earned a bachelor’s degree in social work, Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, and an advanced certificate in Special Education. He began his teaching career in 2000 and worked for Covington City Schools and Tipton County Schools. During Allan’s time at Crestview Middle School, he served as Head Coach of both the girls (2007-2009) and boys (2010-2016) basketball teams. He retired from teaching in 2016.
Allan and his wife, Lavonne, moved to Mount Juliet, Tennessee in 2019. They enjoyed watching movies, dancing, and spending time with their children and grandchildren. Allan loved his family and friends dearly.
Allan is preceded in death by his parents Joel and Helen Curtis, and Claude Barrow II; sons Joseph Barrow and Dedrick Lewis, Jr.; sisters Lisa Middleton and Jackie Jackson; and brothers Claude Barrow III, Tyrone Barrow, Victor Barrow, Raymond Curtis, and Dennis Barrow. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Lavonne Barrow; sons Allan Barrow II and Kyle Jones; daughters Fallan Faulkner (Nathan), Fiana Barrow, and Keja Jones; sisters Melinda Ann Curtis, Angela (Buffy) Curtis Hooks (Dave), Roselyn Middleton Reed, and Danielle Middleton; brothers Craig Middleton and Darrin Barrow; 10 grandchildren, and several cousins, family by marriage and family by friendship.
