Allan Sidney Curtis' Obituary
CURTIS, Allan Sidney; passed away Monday, September 27, 2010 of complications from non-Hodgkins lymphoma. A native of Nashville, Mr. Curtis enlisted in the Army promptly after graduating from East High School. Following his service in the 178th Army Corps of Engineers during World War II in Europe, he graduated from Middle Tennessee State University and then earned a master’s from George Peabody College. While working for the Tennessee Department of Revenue he earned a law degree from the Nashville School of Law. Allan retired as Director of the Tennessee Department of Revenue, Division of Franchise and Excise Tax in 1990 after 40 years of service. He then served as Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance under Governor McWherter. In retirement he enjoyed the opportunity to play more tennis and volunteer for the Nashville Chapter of the American Red Cross, where he enjoyed driving a van to pick up blood throughout rural Tennessee and Kentucky. He was a longtime member of the Pate Sunday School Class at Nashville First Church of the Nazarene. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Dorothy Stevens Curtis. He is survived by his daughter Susan Curtis of New York, New York and son, Allan Curtis of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and by a sister-in-law, Louise Allsbrooks, niece, Ramona Ann Robertson, and nephew Ronnie Allsbrooks. Funeral services will be on Thursday September 30, 2010 at 2PM in the chapel of Spring Hill Funeral Home with Bro. Bill Strickland officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-7PM and Thursday from 12-2PM. Interment will be in Historic Spring Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in honor of Allan Sidney Curtis to the Nashville Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, 2201 Charlotte Ave, Nashville, TN 37203.
