Mrs. Allene Bush grew up with 5 siblings in a small farmhouse in Hickman County. She attended class in a single room schoolhouse serving 1st through 8th grade. Allene was a proud member of the creek pole-vaulting team. She dined on delicacies such as farm raised vegetables, livestock, rabbit and squirrel. Allene’s love of books and learning led her to walk two miles, every day, to catch the Hickman County High school bus and then 2 miles back home. She proudly became the first member of her family to obtain a high school diploma.
A few years later while working and living in Nashville, she met James
Henry Bush. Allene soon made Mr. Bush into “the proudest man in the
whole State of Tennessee” when she became Mrs. Allene Bush. Their love
lasted 3 months shy of 70 years and produced two children, 4 grandkids, 8
“great-grand babies”, and was a shining example of what a marriage could
and should be. She passed down to her family a love of learning which resulted in two doctorates, two masters and four bachelor degrees.
Over the years, she worked as a typist, seamstress and school crossing
guard. Eventually, She channelled her expertise in raising children to own
and manage a daycare for a period of 8 years. Allene never lost her love of books and was an avid reader until her eyes quit on her. She specialized in Sunday dinners at Grandma’s House, warm hugs and making sure that her family “walked the line”. She enjoyed traveling the world with family and life-long friends.
She proudly attended Joywood Church of Christ and Jackson Park Church
of Christ. She was responsible for bringing her husband to Christ and making sure that all of her family attended a “good Christian Church”. She almost never missed a Sunday service until her body failed her.
Allene was a fighter. She beat poverty, breast cancer, ill-behaving children, and the odds. She lost her life to Congestive Heart Failure. But, she never lost her faithfulness, steadfastness, sense of humor, determination, and love for her family, friends and God. Allene may have lost her life but she will never lose her family’s deepest love and respect for all she gave.
