Mrs. Bertha L. Brooks' Obituary
Bertha L. Brooks, age 72, of Springfield passed away on December 6, 2014. Bertha was born on February 17, 1942. Bertha was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to countless people.
Bertha will be remembered as a “firecracker” who was always ready to help others, even if it meant that she herself would go without. Family members recall that Bertha “never took any guff” from anyone, but was one of the most kind-hearted and loving people they knew. She was a worrier; she fussed and worried over others more than she worried over herself. A favorite saying of Bertha’s was “Lord, mercy !” and she would exclaim it whenever she heard a story she couldn’t believe. Bertha was a great cook, too. She passed on her recipe for great turkey dressing to her grand-daughter, Mindy; but even Mindy admits that Bertha would probably want her to use more sage. She started a tradition of making Peppermint Cake every year around Christmas, and she made enough food for an army during the holidays. Whenever company would come by she would always nod toward the kitchen and say, “Fix ya a plate!”
Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 28 years, Thomas Brooks, Sr., five siblings, and one grandchild. She is survived by her children, Deborah (Carl) Jarman, John Brooks, Thomas “Earl” (Pam) Brooks, Jr., and Bubba Brooks; brother, Harold (Joyce) Quinn; grandchildren, C.J. Jarman, Mindy (Eugene) Carter, Kristen Brooks, Ricky Perry, Michelle Boss, and Wendy Charbeneau; ten great-grandchildren; and many friends who she loved as if they were family.
Bertha’s family will receive friends and visitors on Tuesday, December 8, 2014, from 2pm until 8pm at Spring Hill Funeral Home. Additional visitation will take place on Wednesday, December 9, 2014, from 11am until 2pm.
A Celebration of Life Ceremony to honor Bertha will take place on Wednesday, December 9, 2014 at 2pm, from the Chapel of Spring Hill Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Pinecrest Section of Historic Spring Hill Cemetery.
