Mr. Billy J. Cox's Obituary
Billy J. Cox, age 87, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2017 surrounded by his family at Skyline Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was a graduate of East High School and had been a member of Dalewood Baptist Church since the mid 1960’s. For many years, he and his wife, Myrtie, taught one of the first formerly married Sunday School classes formed in the Southern Baptist Convention. He has continued to serve in many capacities over the years and was elected Deacon Emeritus in 2010. A veteran of the Korean War, he served on the carrier USS Essex. He retired from BellSouth in 1994 after 40 years of service. Billy was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. A good friend to many over the years. He had a quick smile and a wry sense of humor. He will be dearly missed.
He is preceded in death by Myrtie Lee (Bowman) Cox, his wife of 50 years; son David Hartwell Cox, and his parents Hartwell and Maude Cox.
Mr. Cox is survived by two children, Billy J. Cox, Jr. and wife, Faye of Nashville, Jackie Littlefield and husband, Tom of Nashville; two grandchildren, Corey Hartwell Cox of Melbourne, Austrailia and Erin Elizabeth Cox of Nashville.
A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Dalewood Baptist Church, 1586 McGavock Pike, Nashville, TN 37216 at 1:00 pm with Mike Dawson, Paul Wampler, and Ken Castleberry officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 from 4 pm til 8 pm at Spring Hill Funeral Home with an additional visitation on Thursday from 11am-1pm at the church. Interment will follow in the Historic Spring Hill Cemetery.
The Cox family would like to extend our gratitude to all the staff of the Centennial Heart Group at Skyline Medical Center for their loving care of Billy over the years, and the 7th floor staff for their kindness and care during his hospital stay.
Serving as pallbearers will be; Cliff Overby, Joey Coleman, Kenneth Reeder, Bubba Barnes, Don Pyland, Tom Odum.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dalewood Baptist Church, 1586 McGavock Pike, Nashville, TN 37216.
