Bobby Meeks' Obituary
Bobby Allen Meeks was born July 9, 1942 in Miami Florida, to Abraham and Mable Meeks. He departed this life Monday, April 16, 2012. Bobby’s parents moved to New York City when he was just a toddler. He lived with his parents until his teen years when he returned to Florida to live with his grandmother Elizabeth Taylor. After his High School graduation, he attended Florida A & M University in Tallahassee, Florida. He then moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he enrolled as a student at Tennessee State University and subsequently made Nashville his permanent home. Working was the story of Bobby’s life. He was a hard worker who was extremely dependable. In fact, he celebrated forty years of employment on April 1st with the Tennessee Department of Health. He also worked part-time as a phlebotomist for nearly fifteen years in conjunction with this full-time job. During the last few weeks of his life his health began to deteriorate rapidly. When his co-workers inquired as to how he was feeling, he always responded, “I am OK”. He told his supervisor that “soon she would know everything. Everyone can attest to the fact that Bobby in general was a very private person and he never wanted any one to worry about him. This caused him to bear the burden of his sickness alone. The love of his job and his co-workers, (which became his Nashville family), caused him to continue to show-up in-spite of his physical condition. When he did not come in on the 16th they knew that something was not right and soon found out that he had transitioned. His co-workers report what a joy it was working with him down through the years and how he will be sorely missed. Bobby had a sense of humor that would always take you by surprise. Bobby loved jazz and enjoyed attending concerts. He enjoyed reading, the arts, collecting model cars, artwork, pottery, ducks, and nutcrackers. Purchasing clothes was a serious past time for Bobby. In fact, he took pride in buying the best garments that were of top quality. He was also a serious sports fan. When not looking at sports, he would be listening to jazz. Caring for plants and photography were also two passions that gave him great joy. His home and his job were flooded with them. Bobby looked forward to his yearly visit with his family in New York at Christmas time and made an extra visit if something special was happening. When he came, he enjoyed going into the city to visit his old stomping grounds and reacquaint himself with the New York he once knew. His nieces and nephews loved him dearly from the youngest to the oldest, and he adored them even more. He was pre-deceased by his Mother and Father, Abraham and Mable Meeks; siblings: Eloise Hanshaw; Beatrice Pressley; George Bullard; Abraham Meeks Jr. and Larry Meeks. He is survived by four sisters: Isadora Pension of Hollywood, Florida; Carolin Sanders of Paramount, CA; Margaret Mundy (William) of Staten Island, New York; and Rose Marie Sparrow, of West Deptford, N.J.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A celebration of Bobby’s life will be conducted at 12 PM, Saturday, April 28, 2012 from the Chapel of Spring Hill Funeral Home with Rev. Rose Marie Sparrow officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 A.M. until the time of service at Spring Hill Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to Wells for Life at wellsforlife.org.
