Bobby R. Mulholland Jr.'s Obituary
Bobby R. “Bob” Mulholland, Jr.
December 18, 1952 - December 12, 2023
Bobby R. “Bob” Mulholland, Jr., age 70, left his earthly home for his heavenly home on December 12, 2023, after a courageous battle due to complications from diabetes.
Bob was born to Bobby R. Mulholland, Sr., and Dorothy Sue Freeny Mulholland and spent his formative years in Mississippi and Tennessee before residing in the Jackson, MS area for most of his adult life. After graduating from Mississippi College, Bob began his accounting career with Binswanger Glass Company and then ultimately retired after 37 years in the budget and accounting division of the Mississippi Department of Health and Human Services in Jackson, MS. Bob was a much-loved coworker and friend to all those he encountered.
During his years in Jackson, MS, Bob served in the Mississippi Army National Guard where he completed 16 years of distinguished military service. He often told the story of how he trained to become a cook in the Guard as it was the very last occupational choice on the list! As a cook, his unit won numerous awards for their culinary creations. He even taught his own family members how to turn ordinary mashed potatoes into a divine dish------"It’s all in the butter and sour cream additions,” he would say!
In late 2016, due to health reasons, Bob moved to Nashville, TN, to be closer to his only daughter, Holly, and her family. Bob often said how blessed he was to move near Holly, Robert and his grandchildren, Dylan and Maya. Being with his family was one of his greatest joys in life.
Bob’s love for music began at an early age, and he inherited his mom’s ability to “play by ear.” Never having been formally trained, Bob was self-taught on the drums and electric guitar. As a teenager, he started playing drums at his home church---Hillcrest Baptist---which led to a lifelong love of “drumming.” That musical talent led to Bob being a drummer in several rock and roll bands over the years. Being an avid Beatles fan, Bob’s favorite drummer was Ringo Starr, and with Holly’s help, Bob was able to see him perform at the Ryman several years ago. Bob’s collection of Beatles memorabilia literally spanned decades.
Affectionately named “Peepaw” by his grandchildren, Bob relished the time he spent with his family and delighted in his grandchildren’s accomplishments.
Bob leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved daughter, Holly, his ”computer guru” (Bob’s words exactly) son-in-law Robert, and his multi-talented grandson Dylan and granddaughter Maya of Nashville, TN. Bob also leaves his only sister, Lynda McDonald, and her husband Mark, of Meridian, MS, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and dear friends who delighted in his wacky sense of humor and ability to tell jokes which kept everyone around him laughing.
Bob was preceded in death by his loving parents, Bob and Sue Mulholland, and his former wife and beloved mother to their only child, Agnes Reed Mulholland.
The family extends heartfelt appreciation to Bob’s doctors and nurses at Vanderbilt Medical Center who have lovingly and skillfully cared for him over the past seven years. To Holly’s colleagues at Vanderbilt who have graciously offered their love and support to her over the years, the entire extended family offers their humble thanks. And to the team at Alive Hospice, our deepest gratitude for ministering to Bob in his final days. No words can truly convey our profound gratitude to all who touched Bob's life.
Bob will be laid to rest on Monday, December 18th, 2023, at two forty-five in the afternoon at Historic Spring Hill Cemetery. Those who will be in attendance are asked to gather at Spring Hill Funeral Home at two thirty in the afternoon, and to follow our staff in procession to the space.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that you consider donating to gibsonfoundation.org in Bob’s memory as this allows the gift of music that he loved so dearly to be shared by future generations, or choose your favorite charity and give in memory of Bob.
Final arrangements for Mr. Mulholland, Jr. are entrusted to Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery, "Where Nashville Comes to Remember."
