Charles Edward Duemler's Obituary
Ed Duemler Obituary C. Edward Duemler, 73, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, August 14, 2023. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Ed is predeceased by his parents, Genie Duemler Freeman and Alfred Duemler, Jr. He leaves behind his two sons, Sam and Wyatt Duemler, his brother, Tad Duemler (Sue), his partner, Susan Harmon, his uncle and aunt, Ed and Alice Weber, and many fine cousins.
Growing up in Cincinnati, Ed graduated from Walnut Hills High School where he was an excellent student and athlete. He attended the University of Cincinnati for two years, then took a break from college in the early 1970’s. He hitchhiked and picked up jobs around the U.S. and Europe before coming back to Ohio and graduating from Miami University with a degree in Economics. Ed taught math in middle school before moving to the business sector and working for Cincom as a computer programmer and then as a software systems trainer.
Ed’s family and friends enjoyed his music, his conversation, and his quest for a good connection with the people around him. A talented songwriter, guitarist, and singer, Ed loved songs that told the truth and that made the listener feel something. Ed read widely, and his curiosity about the world, politics, religion, and culture was prodigious.
Ed could also build houses, make play furniture for his sons from plans he created, write computer code, and fix broken cars. One of his many jobs in his roving youth was deckhand on the Delta Queen, a riverboat that traveled up and down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
He carried memories and stories from that time and so many others close to his heart and enjoyed reconnecting with old friends from across the years.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be given to Save the Music Foundation, a nonprofit focused on providing equitable music education for students all over the country. Ed’s musical life was deep and rich and woven into how he thought about the world and the people in it. He recognized the vital importance of keeping music in schools and he believed that everyone deserved to experience music for the joy of music’s sake.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 23, from 1:00-2:00 pm at Spring Hill Funeral Home in Nashville, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 pm.
