Mr. Chester Campbell's Obituary
Mr. Chester Douglas Campbell, age 94 of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2020. He was born on November 30, 1925 in Nashville, Tennessee to the late Carl and Maude Campbell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 46 years, Alma Miracle Campbell. He is survived by his wife of 20 years Sarah Scott Campbell, his children Steve Campbell (Gayle), Mark Campbell (IPun), Anne Campbell (Vanessa), and Betsy Campbell (Jim Simmons), as well as his stepchildren Judy Metcalf and Bill Jones. He is also survived by his grandchildren Leigh, Harry, Melody, and Jeremy Simmons, Dan, Andrew, John, and Ed Campbell by his first wife, as well as numerous bonus grandchildren and great-grandchildren he acquired when he married Sarah.
Mr. Campbell was a jack of all trades and held many jobs over the course of his long and full life. He had been everything from a drugstore cowboy, to an electrician's helper, he sold women's shoes, was an order filler at Washington Manufacturing Company, a mail sorter at the Post Office, an aviation cadet in the Army Air Forces, a freelance writer, a newspaper reporter, an Air Force intelligence officer, a newspaper copy editor, a public relations account executive, speech writer for a governor, magazine editor and publisher, and advertising copywriter. He always did whatever was necessary to follow his dream of being a writer, but more importantly to provide for his family. He went on to write many novels in his later years and was a published mystery writer. On his website www.chesterdcampbell.com he reflects on his writing career and says, “It’s been a blast. I’d do a few things differently, but overall I wouldn’t change the course. If writing is in your blood, regardless of all else, you write.”
