Dr. David Andrew Lewellen's Obituary
Dr. David Andrew Lewellen, (Lt. Colonel, Ret.) passed away on November 16th, 2023, in Hendersonville, Tennessee. He was born on May 5th, 1938, in Memphis, Tennessee to Aubrey Andrew Lewellen and Marie Foley Lewellen.
Dr. Lewellen was a pediatric dentist. He obtained his dental degree in 1972 and his specialty in 1977. After he obtained his dental degree, he was director of dental services at Arlington Developmental Center for the Handicapped and an associate professor in the children’s clinic at the University of Tennessee Dental School prior to obtaining his specialty degree. He moved to Nashville in 1978 and opened his first pediatric dental practice in Madison. He also opened an additional office at Maryland Farms in Brentwood and retired from dentistry in 2003.
Dr. Lewellen also served his country in the Tennessee Air National Guard. He joined the Memphis unit in 1955 while still in high school. He became a flight engineer and flew many miles around the world. He left the Memphis unit as a master sergeant in 1974 and transferred to the Nashville hospital, where he was commissioned as a captain. He retired in 1993 as a Lieutenant Colonel after 38 years of service.
He is survived by his wife Cynthia Duncan Lewellen, daughters Julie Flannagan and Kelly Nelson; son Kevin (Janet) Lewellen; stepdaughter Karen (Sean) Anderson; stepson Andy Tubb; beloved grandchildren Brady Dodson, Allie Dodson, Aidan Flannagan, Keegan Flannagan, Juliana Nelson, Jenna Claire (Tyler) Woody, Justin (Kelly) Lewellen, Caitlin Lewellen, and Ashleigh Lewellen; great-grandchildren Ava Rose, Darby, and Elias; sister Bunny (Benny) Krag; brother Sam (Linda) Lewellen; and a host of extended family and dear friends.
The family cordially invites guests and relatives for a time of visitation on Sunday, November 19th, 2023, from three o’clock in the afternoon until six o’clock in the evening, and on Monday, November 20th, 2023, from twelve o’clock in the afternoon until two o’clock in the afternoon, with a funeral service at two o’clock and entombment to follow at Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5110 Gallatin Road, Nashville, TN 37216.
Final arrangements for Dr. Lewellen are entrusted to Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery, “Where Nashville Comes to Remember.”
