The family of David Waller are beyond saddened and grieved to share the news that David passed away on the evening of December 2, 2020. While it’s difficult to imagine a life without him in it, there is some comfort in the fact that he passed peacefully and quickly after his long journey confronting his cancer diagnosis. We ask that his numerous friends and family join us in remembering him by celebrating the fact that David lived such a full life—one with frequent beach trips to Indian Rocks Beach, regular weekend dinners with family, large holiday celebrations whose traditions spanned decades, and spending plenty of summer days poolside with his wife, children, and extended family who were also the dearest of friends. He also made our lives full, he was the father who taught his kids everything from sports to driving to swimming and diving in the ocean, the husband who always did the hard chores just because he didn’t want anyone else to have to do it (and even tried to cook occasionally), and the friend to so many to whom he attentively listened and eagerly volunteered help or a laugh.
He was the king of small acts of kindness who would quietly surprise his wife and kids with full tanks of gas before we left for work or school at the beginning of each week, who would wake up early on vacation to make sure coffee was ready for everyone else, who would help acquaintances and friends with projects and vehemently decline their insistence to pay him, and who would make sure to call early on Saturday mornings to let everyone know the pool was clean and ready for a visit to swim for the afternoon. His kindness was pampering others, in fact, and he did it not out of expectation of reciprocation, but simply because he wanted to be of service to his family, friends, and community.
We would be remiss not to mention how much David treasured his work but particularly his acquired family there—he spent 30 years with some of them as they worked together on a variety of projects. He was a proud native Nashvillian and loved working on so many of the city’s buildings.
While the next trip to Indian Rocks Beach, the upcoming holidays, and every family dinner until a time we can’t yet imagine will be different and have a noticeable void, the ultimate peace and resolution for his family and dear friends is firmly rooted in the fact the he is now at peace and at rest with his Lord in Heaven. The world couldn’t be more fortunate to gain such a caring, devoted, and supportive angel.
He joins those who have preceded him in death, including his sweet mother, Gearldean Waller Smith, his father Pete Waller and numerous aunts and uncles. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Beth, his adoring children Joshua and Leslie, son-in-law Justin Sadler, his mother-in-law Jean Bryan Allen who loved him like a son, his sister Sharon Earls and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews who were just so special to David.
We are requesting that in lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to contribute to David’s legacy consider a donation to either the Ronald McDonald House or Operation Stand Down Tennessee.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 from 3pm to 8pm at Spring Hill Funeral Home. A celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at 11 am with an hour of visitation prior.
