Don Comp's Obituary
Don Comp, a man of many talents and a heart full of music, passed away on April 9th, 2024, in Florida. Born on May 4th, 1936, in Norman, Oklahoma, he was the son of L.A. Comp and Helen Jones Comp.
As a young man, Don embarked on a journey that led him from the plains of Oklahoma to the bustling streets of Brooklyn, New York. It was there that he found love at church. Edna, the woman who would become the love of his life, captured his heart. They married, and together they raised three daughters: Joyce, Donna, and Grace.
Don’s professional life was dedicated to education. He served as a high school English teacher, imparting knowledge, and inspiring countless students. But beyond the classroom, his true passion lay in the world of music. Don was a gifted musician, proficient in playing the piano, guitar, and upright bass. His soul resonated with melodies, and he shared that gift with others through teaching and composing music.
Notably, Don also had a keen eye for photography. He worked as a photographer for renowned guitarist Chet Atkins, capturing moments that would become part of music history. His lens framed the magic of live performances, the intensity of studio sessions, and the camaraderie among musicians. At the end of his multifaceted career, Don retired as a computer coordinator.
In the early 1990s, Don and his wife made their home in Madison, Tennessee. They built a life there, surrounded by the sounds of music and the warmth of family bonds. Sadly, Edna’s passing in 2006 left a void in Don’s heart, but he continued to cherish their memories.
In the twilight of his life, Don found solace in the Florida sun. He reveled in the ocean breeze, perhaps humming a tune or strumming his guitar as the waves crashed against the shore. His legacy lives on through the music he played, the lessons he taught, and the love he shared.
Don was a harmonious soul and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. May his melodies echo in our hearts forever.
In addition to his parents L.A. and Helen, Don is preceded in death by his sister Bobbie Gallagher, and grandson David Donovan. He is survived by his daughters Joyce Watson (Bob), Donna McGibbon, and Grace Comp; grandchildren Alyssa DeBlasio, Justin McGibbon, Tyler McGibbon, Alex Donovan, Willow Dreyfuss, and Kaitlyn Donovan; great-grandchildren Nina and Jaxon; niece Edna Marie Emilson; and a host of extended family and dear friends.
A memorial service in honor of Don’s life will be held on Saturday, June 15th, 2024, at 2:00 in the afternoon at Spring Hill Funeral Home, with visitation an hour prior. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery. All are welcome.
Final arrangements for Mr. Comp are entrusted to Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery, “Where Nashville Comes to Remember.”
