Mr. Donald M. Wewe's Obituary
Donald Michael Wewe died in his home, surrounded by family Friday morning, August 10th 2018. He was a miraculous 79 years old when he passed. He was preceded in death by his parents Bernard Conrad Wewe and Catherine Ann Bender. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carol Lee (Moore) Wewe; his daughter, Renee Catherine Garb and her husband Gary “Doc” Garb of Madison, TN.
Donald was born in Liberty, Indiana and grew up on his family farm. At the age of 5 Donald contracted Polio. He received extensive medical treatment at the Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio where he actually became their poster child for advertisements. That’s when the world knew that smile of his was infectious! After many years of medical treatments and surgeries he had a fairly normal childhood and teen years. He was able to help his dad on the farm with the crops and livestock, work on race cars and of course run around with friends and cousins.
He met the love of his life in 1959. After dating for 4 years Donald and Carol were married June 29th 1963. They then moved to Mooresville, Indiana where they lived there for 54 years. Donald worked for the State of Indiana Transportation Department as a clerk until 1986 when his Post-Polio syndrome took hold and he was then disabled.
Donald was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church for 50 years where he was an active member of Knights of Columbus; was a founding member of the Apple Festival, where he cooked burgers at Don’s Chuck Wagon; and of course enjoyed the many Euchre games and car shows held at the church.
The greatest loves of his life were his family; watching his daughter play ball or perform on stage; and RACING! Racing ran in his blood and he could watch anything go around a track from midget cars to stock and Indy cars. During the month of May you could always find Donald at the Indianapolis 500 Track.
At the end of 2017 Donald and Carol moved to Madison, TN to live with their daughter Renee and her husband Gary. His most recent interests included watching Gary build an in-law suite onto their home where Donald would “supervise” the daily contraction; bird and squirrel watching on the front porch; “deer hunting” which consisted of driving around the local lakes counting the beauties he loved; visits from friends and family; keeping up with his beloved Colts while adapting to becoming a Titans fan; and of course loving on his Yorkie Shelby and two grand-dogs Bella and Bobbi Sox.
At the end of his life, Donald was happy and content. He smiled up until the very last moment and will forever be missed by those who loved him. He had many different names, Donald, Don, Donny, Duke, Daddy and Papa Wewe. No matter what you called him he answered with a smile and a witty sense of humor and will forever more do so in our hearts.
Visitation for Donald will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 from 11 AM until 1 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1225 Gallatin Pike South, Madison, TN, 37115. Funeral Mass will be held at 1 PM. Burial will follow at Historic Spring Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery, A Nashville landmark since 1785 "Where Nashville Comes to Remember"
