Emerson Bruton Mefford III was born on June 21, 1962, as the last of five children to Emerson B. Mefford, Jr., and Lucille Wallace Mefford. He transitioned from his earthly life into eternity on Tuesday August 15, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Jesse N. Mefford and sister Anna L. Rucker.
Emerson professed a hope in Christ as a child at Progressive Baptist Church. Under the late Rev. J. Lewis Powell. He continued his spiritual education at Faith United Missionary Baptist Church, where his father was a charter member. He was educated in the Nashville Metropolitan School System and graduated in 1980 from Maplewood High School. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served our country. Emerson was joined in holy matrimony to Beverly (Crawford) Johnson, which created his blended family with her oldest Stanley Ross and his oldest son Michael Ferby. Shortly after they welcome their son, Jemar Mefford. They remained close friends and great co-parents.
At his time of passing, he was employed at Gaylord Marriott Opryland but had worked for Carolyn Homestyle Kitchen, State of Tennessee, TN State University and Tom Bell Mobile Service. He enjoyed meeting and being in the present of others, he was a true extrovert. He just loved being around people and hanging with the Haynes Manor crew. Spanky had a caring and giving spirit. He was a BIG fan of the Pittsburg Steelers and Tennessee State University football. His other past times were watching old Cowboy movies and fishing.
To know Emerson, affectionally known by all as “Spanky,” was to love him. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He loved being around family especially during the holidays where he was always the life of the party. He had an infectious smile and sense of humor and never met a stranger. He was well known, and well-liked. Spanky will always be loved, deeply missed, and never forgotten by his family and friends. Last Tuesday he spread his wings and took a flight To Be with GOD and his heavenly family!
He leaves to cherish his memory, three loving and devoted sons, Jermar Mefford (Amber), Michael Ferby (Maya) and Stanley Ross, Jr. (Ashley), supportive friend and partner Theresa Fuqua, beloved grandchildren who were his heartbeat Nykiah Mefford, J’Mareah Mefford, Jace Mefford, Ayden Mefford, Jaydin Mefford, Michaya Ferby, McKinley Ferby, Mekhi Ferby, Savannah Ross and Stanley Ross III, devoted sisters, Ethel Theresa Fennell and Emily M.
