Mrs. Emily Selig's Obituary
Emily Selig passed away peacefully in her sleep April 28th, 2018, at her home in Madison, TN, after a long and independent life. She was 88 years old.
She graduated from Isaac Litton High School in 1947 and in later years enjoyed lunches with her class lunch bunch, the Litton Chicks, for many years.
She worked for Merrill Lynch in several capacities over the years, most recently in Data Entry. She made and maintained numerous dear friends there, keeping in touch with many of them even into retirement.
She was a lifelong active member and church pianist at Lockland Baptist Church for more than 50 years and for many of those years she served alongside her mother who played the organ.
She would play piano any time she was asked. She was not just willing, but eager to serve. Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night, choir rehearsals, banquets, weddings, whatever, whenever.
And she maintained a sense of humor under all circumstances. Ready to laugh, she appreciated humor. The choir always looked forward to rehearsal because, no matter how she felt, she always made them smile.
Emily was a strong resilient woman who would speak her mind with a dry sense of humor.
And she had a playful nature but you would have to pay attention or you would miss it.
She always had a lot of jokes to tell.
You could always count on honest feedback from Emily and she did not sugarcoat things.
She was fiercely independent long before it was acceptable for women, particularly in the workplace.
She seemed to never let anything get her down, even though being a young mother raising a young son on her own was no easy task during the 1950s and 60s. But she seemed to just shrug her shoulders and roll with the punches, making the best out of wherever she was in her life. She even survived lung cancer relatively early in life, taking her daily walks as long as she was able.
She was welcoming, warm and generous to the important people in her life and always had a network of friends. She wasn’t afraid to try new things and always seemed younger than her years. She was a loving fun person who many considered a dear friend.
She shared a wonderful relationship with her brother Bernard who meant the world to her.
She was proud of the man the son she raised became.
She was very proud of her hot pink walker.
She is preceded in death by her Father (Bernard), Mother (Elma), Older Brother (Bernard, Jr.) and Younger Brother (Jackie).
She is survived by her Son (Bill), Niece (Kim) and Nephews (Kevin, Rick and Chuck).
Visitation will take place on Saturday, May 5, 2018 from 9am-11am at Spring Hill Funeral Home. A Graveside ceremony will be held on Saturday at 11am at Spring Hill Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Spring Hill Funeral Home, 5110 Gallatin Road, Nashville, TN 37216, 615-861-8509, www.springhillfh.com.
