Ernest William Colbert's Obituary
Ernest William Colbert, age 90 of Madison, TN passed away January 12, 2012. Mr. Colbert was born September 18, 1921 to Ernest W. and Roberta Ellen Shelton Colbert in Stafford, VA. Mr. Colbert was a member of Dalewood United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Quiet Birdmen and also served the community as a Mason. He will long be remembered for his love of flying. He was an accomplished pilot, a certified flight examiner and a licensed aircraft mechanic. He was the founder and owner of Cornelia Fort Airpark. His pioneering development of “Colemill Conversions” brought improvements to aircraft safety and performance and led to his induction into the Tennessee Aviation Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Colbert. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Elaine L. Colbert; sons, Bill N. (Virginia), Donald B., Richard L. (Wanda) and Carl (Karen) Colbert; daughter, Susan Lynn Colbert; stepchildren, Debbie E. (Foster) Lynn and John H. Edwards; daughter-in-law, Mary Colbert; grandchildren, Todd, Christopher, Ty, Tonya, Regen, Logan, Erin, Brett, Ryan, Corinne, Peter, Jonathan, Brent and Lauren; and many great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren. A celebration of Mr. Colbert’s life will be conducted at 2 P.M., Sunday, January 15, 2012 from the Chapel of Spring Hill Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery with family and friends serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 4 PM until 7 PM on Saturday, January 14, 2012 and from 12 PM until 1:45 PM Sunday, prior to the service at Spring Hill Funeral Home. Memorial contributions should be made to the Dalewood United Methodist Foundation.
