Garland Preston Rose Sr.'s Obituary
Rose Sr. Garland Preston, Age 94 of Nashville, TN passed away April 10, 2011. He was born in Hopkinsville, KY on June 30, 1916. Preceded in death by parents Samuel J. and Janie Posey Rose and sisters Posey Scott and Sammie Hendrix. Survived by wife of 70 years, Martha Virginia Jenkins Rose, daughter Mary Etta O'Day; son Garland (Mary Jane) Rose Jr.; grandchildren Ron ( Michelle) Roberts, Paige (Brad) Garner, Cyndi (Andrew) Murr and Janie E. Rose; great grandchildren Kaci Roberts, Taylor Rose Roberts, Britney Garner, Ryan Garner, Margaret Ann (Maggie) Murr and Nolan Murr. He attended Central High School and graduated from East Nashville High School in 1935. Upon graduation, he joined the Accounting Department of the United Methodist Publishing House, retiring 46 years later in 1981 as manager of Methods and Procedures. In 1943 his employment was interrupted by training and service in the United States Army as a Radar Mechanic, Ground Control Approach (GCA). Discharged as a sergeant in 1946, he returned to the Publishing House. Garland was active in his community by teaching Sunday School at Hobson, Belmont and Dalewood Methodist Churches, founding and teaching the Dynomo public speaking club, service as a Chapter President of the local Administrative Management Society, and serving on the Nashville Memorial Hospital Board from 1964 to 1994. He served on the Board of Trustees for the Memorial Foundation from 1994 to 2008 when he was honored as an Advisory Board Member for Life. In 1956, with the knowledge of his employer, he earned a Public Accounting License and provided personal service to small businesses and individuals on a part-time basis. His practice grew to include doctors, dentists, and representatives in the American Saddlebred Horse industry. In 1990 he was grandfathered as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). His pride was naming "Garland's Dream" the 1998 and 1999 Saddlebred Five-Gaited World's Grand Champion. Garland loved his family and worked hard to provide for them. At work or play he never met a stranger. He loved to tell stories and play golf. He was a member of Bluegrass Country Club for over 50 years and a 32 Degree Mason, Scottish Rite. Services will be conducted on Friday April 15, 2011 2PM at Spring Hill Funeral Home, Bro. Ronnie Webb officiating. Visitation will begin at 12PM till service time. Interment to follow in Historic Spring HIll Cemetery. Active Pallbearers include: John W. Brown, Sam Holt Jr., Dale Kehrer, Andrew Murr, Ron Roberts Jr. Ronny Sadler.
