George Stevens Downing's Obituary
George Stevens Downing, 95, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, October 28, 2022. Born January 26, 1927, in Smyrna, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Robert William Downing and Willie Wave Stevens Downing.
Mr. Downing served his country proudly in the Merchant Marines and the United States Air Force. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. George started his business in the family’s carport with a Linotype machine. He would nurture and grow D & T Typesetting to where it employed 30 people and was located in what is now the Gulch area of Nashville. His family will remember him as an avid bass fisherman who took pride in his yardwork and loved the University of Tennessee, Vanderbilt University and Tennessee Titans football.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Alyce Mousette Downing; brothers Eugene Downing and Robert William Downing, Jr.
He is survived by his children Laura Denise (Miles) Downing Burdine, William Leonard (Kathy) Downing, Mark Stevens Downing, James Michael (Mandy) Downing, and Christine Marie (Wesley) Downing White; grandchildren Nikki (Justin) Williams, Laura Burdine, Alyce (Alexander) Johnson, Cara (Dakota) Angell, Chase Downing, Russell (Mary) Downing, Danielle (Ernest) Myles, Jimmy Downing, TJ Downing, Edgerrin Downing, Greyson White and Hudson White; great grandchildren Andi, Ada, Wave, Ellie, Charlotte, Vivian, Tristan, Amerie, Brayleigh and Aariston and Asher on their way.
Visitation will be from 4 pm until 8 pm Wednesday, November 2 at Spring Hill Funeral Home in Nashville. A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will take place on Thursday at 12 pm noon at the funeral home. Deacon Ted Welsh will officiate and Col. Miles Burdine will give the euology. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Nashville. Pallbearers will be Chase Downing, Russell Downing, TJ Downing, Edgerrin Downing, Justin Williams, and Dakota Angell.
