Mr. George Murphy's Obituary
George Alexander Murphy, known to family and friends as “Pop”, passed away peacefully and met his Heavenly Father on Father’s Day, June 17, 2018. Grieve with us but also celebrate with us.
Pop was a devoted and faithful husband to Annabelle for 56 years, a cherished father to George Murphy, Jr. (Kay) and Becky Murphy Nickins (Steve). He was an adored and highly esteemed grandfather to Alex Murphy (Lessa), Jenni B Buhler (Ty), and Molly Nickins and a proud great-grandfather to Kolbi Katelyn Buhler and Tyson Alexander Buhler (which made him even greater!) Pop was well loved by many nieces and nephews that know him by his “eyebrow ruffling”.
George was born and raised in Nashville, married Annabelle Cantrell in 1946, after serving three years in WWII as a Crew Chief and Flight Engineer in the Army Air Corp. He retired from Safety Service Co. in 1991 after serving alongside his brother, Letcher, for 33 years.
George served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Inglewood Baptist for over 50 years and was a 32nd degree Mason. He served the 5th and 6th grade class at IBC for over 50 years and only gave up this department a few months ago.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Annabelle, parents, C. L. and Lavinia Murphy, brothers, Carl L. Murphy, JB Murphy, and sister, Ann Claire Duke.
Pop is best known for his love for the Lord and his ability to make others laugh.
