Mr. George Irwin Osment Sr.'s Obituary

George I. Osment, Sr., 90 of Ashland City, TN, passed away on Sunday, November 06, 2022. He was born in Nashville on August 15, 1932, to the late Willie Green and Beulah Frances Osment and grew up in the Jordonia/Scottsboro area. He graduated from Cumberland High School in 1950 and was known as the “Speed King” from drag racing.
In 1951, George joined the United States Marine Corps. He served a total of thirteen years and completed two tours before being honorably discharged in 1965, at the rank of Staff Sergeant. He also earned several medals and badges.
After his time with the Marines, George went to Western Electric and was under their employment for seven years. George then went on to work for Colonial Trucking, Kenworth, Peterbuilt, and finally settled at the Internal Revenue Service where he would later retire. In the mid 1970’s, George decided to get his pilot’s license so he could fly with his brothers. He also joined the Shriners and the Flying Fez and was a member for several years.
George was a member of Scottsboro First Baptist Church for almost thirty years. George and his wife, Ophie, began cooking and serving Wednesday Night Suppers. This was a ministry that he and his wife served faithfully in for twenty-two years. In addition to serving fellowship meals, George served in other various positions, including the finance committee and Sunday School Superintendent, but loved serving as an ordained deacon.
He also volunteered at the Scottsboro Community Club. He and Ophie, along with Tony and Janie Woodard, and countless others, spent a considerable amount of time cooking on Friday Nights and have standing room only. He would also cook pancakes whenever the club had a benefit and was the cashier for the annual BBQ.
George is preceded in death by his wife: Ophie Osment, parents: Willie and Beulah Osment, brothers: James, Billy, David, and Dorris, and sister: Elizabeth.
He is survived by his and Ophie’s five children: Linda (Dwane) Baxter, Georgie Osment, Afranda Osment-Baker, George (Ronda) Osment, Jr., and Darrell Osment; ten grandchildren: Connie (Lewis) Johnson, Timmy (Alanna) Leeper, Nickey Leeper, Wil (Jenny) Osment, Marshall (Erin) Baker III., Savannah Baker, Kyle (Chelsea) Meyer, Gwendolyn Baker, Amber Osment, and Scarlett Osment; eighteen great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his three sisters-in-law: Dell Hughes, Dorothy Osment, and Margaret Nagy as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, November 13th, from 12pm-8pm at Spring Hill Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held on Monday, November 14th, at 12pm with visitation starting at 9am. Burial in Historic Spring Hill Cemetery will follow.
Pallbearers will be Timmy Leeper, Nickey Leeper, Wil Osment, Marshall Baker III., Kyle Meyer, Kolton Leeper, Robert Hartley III., and Dominic Sanders.
