Mrs. Gertrude "True" Magruder's Obituary
On July 17, 2025, Gertrude “True” Guerriero Magruder passed peacefully and went “home” to be with our Lord, surrounded by love, at the age of 75 in Nashville, Tennessee. Her life was marked by faith, quiet strength, and a devotion to her family that will endure for generations.
Born on January 14, 1950, in Monroe, Louisiana, she was the treasured youngest daughter of George Washington Guerriero, of Italian descent, and Wylma Patrick Guerriero, of Irish heritage.
True’s love story with Don Deville Magruder began at Neville High School when she was just 15 years old. Their bond grew through the years, and they were married on February 1, 1969, beginning a journey of over six decades together and 56 years of marriage, a testament to their enduring love and faithfulness.
From an early age, True placed her trust in Jesus and carried that faith with humility and grace throughout her life. Her steady confidence in God’s goodness and her gentle spirit became a source of peace and encouragement to all who knew her. Her passion for scripture stayed with her even in the later stages of Alzheimer’s, as she was able to sing hymns as well as Italian opera.
After their marriage, True and Don moved to Tyler, Texas, where they raised their two sons and, later, renovated their dream home in the historic Azalea District where True implemented her love and knowledge for traditional colonial colors and prints as well as collected antiques. Together, they cultivated a life filled with love, laughter, and service to their community.
While raising her young family, True earned her bachelor’s degree with honors, reflecting her determination and intellect. She built a distinguished career in a male dominated field as a systems analyst, implementing innovative computer and software systems for hospitals and businesses. She was truly a woman before her time.
In addition to her career, she was an accomplished speaker and a finalist in Toastmasters International, served as President of the Historic Tyler Association, and contributed in many other leadership and service roles throughout her life.
True’s love for beauty and joy was evident in the way she lived. She delighted in cooking for her family and friends, filling her home with warmth and hospitality. She found joy in playing the piano, enjoying impressionistic art, and sharing her contagious smile and laughter — both of which lifted the spirits of everyone around her and made people feel at ease.
She is survived by her husband, Don Deville Magruder; her sons, Mark Magruder (and Katy) of Fort Worth, TX and Michael Magruder (and Jana) of Nashville, TN; and her six cherished grandchildren. Her family celebrates the gift of her life and the legacy she leaves — a testimony of faith, love, and grace that continues to inspire all who knew her.
“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” (Proverbs 31:28)
In lieu of flowers, the family invites memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of True’s life and legacy.
