There was only one Harry Bolin. When they made Harry they broke the mold. I had the pleasure of working with and for Harry at 3M National Advertising. Harry was always true to his beliefs that if you work hard and play hard you should be rewarded for your results and if the results were bad be coached on how to improve the situation. During the 1980's Harry was my boss when I was in Dallas,Texas during one of the toughest economic times in my career at the time. When the criticisms started coming from upper management and questioning my abilities to manage the situation Harry came down to say he understood the economic pressures and told me "I got your back Ed". Just keep doing what your doing and the day will come to prove the naysayers wrong. He then said I am staying the weekend in Dallas and I want to take advantage of this time to find a great BBQ joint and get out on the lake with me and Mark Johnson a sales rep. Harry loved to eat and especially good BBQ. We all never forgot that day because we found a BBQ food truck by the lake and the three of us bought way to much BBQ with a few beers and stood outside the truck and made a meal eating all this great BBQ off the hood of the truck. A year later when the economy improved, all the hard work payed off for those difficult 3 years, I was proud to stand up at our National sales meeting and accept the Hammer and Anvil award as the NUMBER 1 district in the division. This was only achievable because a man with a big heart and toughness stood by us and dragged us across the goal line. That included our great management team but I made sure to point out in my speech that Harry Bolin was always there in our corner.
Many things changed during those years and Harry was moved into the Operations side and out of sales management. Everyone thought Harry was done and would fade away and retire. I knew better. With a new Division Vice President at the time Harry proved to him that he could bring many of his new ideas to the company and make the Operations state of the art. All the naysayers that said he was done but all of those pessimists got proved wrong.Harry became well known at 3M headquarters for converting our billboard business from hand painting billboards to a new 3M technology called Computer Graphics. He took us out of the hand painting age to this amazing new computer technology of printing graphics on vinyl. Wow, what a transformation!!! This process changed to outdoor advertising business as we know it today. Harry was pioneer and against all odds he pushed and pushed until he opened the eyes of the industry that now exists today.
As the years ssed Harry and Ikept in touch and remained friends long after we both retired. Harry visited me when I was on assignment in Spain and also here is San Antonio after I retired a few years ago. My thoughts and prayers are with Harry and his extended family.
