Dr. James E. Abernathy's Obituary
Dr. James E. Abernathy (84) of Nashville, TN a dedicated father and pastor passed away in Morristown, TN on June 3rd, 2024.
Dr. Abernathy was born in Nashville, TN to Florence Owens Abernathy and James Eunice Abernathy. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and earned the highest award of Eagle Scout. He attended Cohn High School where he loved playing football before joining the Army Reserve and serving during the Vietnam War. He studied at Nashville State Technical College where he earned his Real Estate and Appraiser Licenses. He owned and operated James Abernathy Real Estate Appraisers in Nashville for over 47 years. James went on to earn a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Business Administration degree at Lindenwood University in St Charles, Missouri before earning a Doctorate in Theology at Master’s International School of Divinity.
Dr. Abernathy was pastor at Arrington Baptist Church in Arrington, TN, and Berryville Baptist Church in Old Hickory, TN. He was a proud member of the Nashville Baptist Association and American Legion Post 17. He loved serving the Lord as a minister, and he officiated many funeral services as well as serving as keynote speaker at numerous real estate appraiser conventions. Dr Abernathy was also a professor at Volunteer State Community College.
Dr Abernathy is preceded in death by his mother Florence, Father James, his brother Howard and his infant sister and is survived by his wife Patricia Cooper Abernathy, daughters Sharon Schutz and Donna Turnbo (Mark), and son James Abernathy II, MD (Alberta) and grandchildren Lindsay Norris (Tommy), Bella Abernathy and Joshua Turnbo and Great grandchildren Heidi and Layne Norris.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday June 11th, 2024, at Spring Hill Funeral Home Nashville, TN at 12pm with Brother Randy Clark officiating. Visitation will be held Monday June 10th, 2024, from 5-8pm and Tuesday, June 11th, from 11am until time of service at Spring Hill Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are James Abernathy II, Mark Turnbo, Joshua Turnbo, Brother Joe Frejosky, Layne Norris, and Matt Schutz. Honorary Pallbearers are Tommy Norris, David Spain, and Bubba Holman.
