James Alvin Martin, Jr.'s Obituary
James A. Martin, Jr., born June 7, 1924 to James A. and Willie Martin in Nashville, died October 4, 2012. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Mary Long “Kibba” Martin. They are survived by three children and two grandchildren and their spouses: James A. Martin III, Henry Martin and Gloria Ballard, Mary Ellen Martin and Carl Pitchford, Nathan and Rachel Martin and Anna Martin, nieces and nephews and special pet Scottie, “Kibba Martin, Jr.”. Jimmy graduated IsaacLittonHigh School and joined the U.S. Navy serving as a Lt.J.G. on the U.S.S. Springfield in the South Pacific in the Second World War. Following his discharge, he obtained an engineering degree from Vanderbilt and went to work for the Dupont Company in Old Hickory, retiring 37 years later as a personnel manager. In his retirement, he gardened, taught his grandchildren to drive and tutored them in math, but mostly stayed by the side of the love of his life as she struggled for more than twenty years with Alzheimer’s. Jimmy was an Eagle Scout and a lifetime member of InglewoodUnitedMethodistChurch. He taught his family generosity, selflessness, tolerance and compassion, but mostly what unconditional love truly means. A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be conducted at 11 A.M., Monday, October 8, 2012 from the Chapel of Spring Hill Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 10 A.M. until the time of service at Spring Hill Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Inglewood United Methodist Church at 3511 Gallatin Road, Nashville, TN 37216 or to the charity of your choice.
