James “Jim” Owen Smith age 91 of Madison, TN passed away December 13, 2025. He was born February 2, 1934 in Calhoun City, MS to the late Owen W. and Marie A. Smith.
Along with parents, Jim was preceded in death by son, Kevin James Smith.
He is survived by loving wife of 35 years and together for 48 wonderful years, Ann J. Smith; daughters, Laurie (Steve) Condra and Stephanie Lynch; grandchildren, Colburn James (Sarah) Condra, Brandy (Brandon) Martin, Christopher Engbrock and Kevin (Patricia) Kosmatka; great-grandsons, Haiden and Kyle Martin; brother, Wayne (Judy) Smith; sister, Barbara (Robert) Hedgepath; cousin, Ronda (Tommy) Morman and many nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Calhoun City, MS, Jim moved to Tennessee to attend school at Trevecca Nazarene High School and graduated in 1952. He served in the Army 4 yrs active duty stateside, and overseas in England and Germany. He then spent 2 years Army Reserve at Berry Field military air facility, Nashville, TN.
He worked at Aladdin Industries and Western Electric, but it was his dedication and love for people that proved to be a success for him in the insurance industry. He retired while living in Houston, TX after a 36-year career with American General Life Insurance Co.
His love of music began during childhood where he sang in church back in Mississippi, and as 1st Tenor in the Trevecca Evangelairs Quartet and Trevecca Choir. He loved playing guitar and enjoyed pickin’ & grinnin’ with his friends.
Jim was an avid sailor, and that is where you would find him most weekends sailing or racing his Pierson, “Sweet Chile” on Percy Priest. He also sailed the Chesapeake and the upper Texas coast and Gulf of Mexico.
Jim was known for having a well-developed skill set, meaning he could fix most things whether it be mechanical, electrical or plumbing. He was methodical, and you could bet things would always get done in the most efficient and pristine way. He knew a little about a lot of things, and he loved to teach anyone who was willing to learn, because that was important to him.
His love for his family, his friends and everyone he met will always be felt…never forgotten.
