Dr. Jean Nicholson's Obituary
Dr. Jean Nicholson passed away on April 8, 2024 in Nashville, TN.
Jean was born January 14, 1935 in Tullahoma to her late parents Leroy I. and Mildred Prince Hagewood. She grew up on a farm in Coffee County, TN and attended public schools in Tullahoma. She received a B.S. degree from George Peabody College in 1956, an M.S. degree from University of Colorado Boulder in 1959, and a Ph.D. degree in Education from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in 1980.
Jean began teaching in Cleveland, OH before returning to Tennessee to continue her education career back home in Tullahoma.
She was married to Stuart Edwin Nicholson on June 9, 1962 at McKendree Methodist Church. She continued her career in various capacities in the Metro Nashville school system, culminating with three years as principal at Bellevue Middle School. Jean then worked as a consultant with the Tennessee Department of Education, and finally Aquinas College in Nashville.
An avid reader, Jean also traveled the world by visiting the 50 states as well as over 15 countries across all 7 continents. In addition to her travels, Jean most enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was particularly interested in keeping alive the relationships of her family by organizing a number of reunions with relatives near and far.
Jean is survived by Stuart, her son Brian and his wife Patricia, granddaughters Molly and Kelsey, nephew John Hagewood and niece Beth Hagewood.
A visitation and celebration service will be held at Church of the Advent in Nashville at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 13 followed by the service at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
