Mrs Jeanne Stevens' Obituary
Jeanne Marie Morton Stevens was born on January 15, 1927 in the midst of winter and she passed from this life on June 7, 2016 during the afternoon of a glorious spring day bursting with the beauty of God's creation.
She is survived by her husband of almost 67 years, Charles Turney Stevens and by her children, Charles Turney Stevens Jr. (Ann) and Alice Jean Stevens. She is also survived by her two grandsons, both of whom she adored: Charles Turney Stevens III (Jennie) and Mark William Stevens. In the last two years of her life, she was blessed by, and took great delight in, her new great grandchild, Charles Turney Stevens IV.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Ernest Morton and Sophie Hamblen Morton, and by her siblings, Charles Ernest Morton Jr. and Reba Morton Sanders as well as their now deceased spouses, Emma Sewell Farnsworth Morton and Robert Page Sanders.
She was a graduate of Cohn High School and studied at David Lipscomb College prior to beginning work at Third National Bank.
Jeanne was married on July 12, 1949 at the Charlotte Avenue Church of Christ where her family had been members for many years.
Her young husband, Turney, had just graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy and had returned to Nashville in hopes of having his own drug store. Within a few months, that dream was realized when the young couple purchased a small store at the intersection of Charlotte Pike and Robertson Avenue. For the next 41 years, Stevens Pharmacy served the West Nashville community with Dr. and Mrs. Stevens as partners and co-owners.
Jeanne Stevens was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, first at Charlotte Avenue, later at the Donelson church, and since 1959 at the Granny White Church of Christ. She taught Sunday School there, prepared and served more fellowship meals than even the best memory can possibly recall, and took a special delight in teaching her weekly Monday night class of students from Inner City Ministry.
She and her sister, Reba, were especially close and they considered each other's children to be their own. Reba's children, John Sanders and Jane Sanders Lynch (Frank) were blessings to her as were her nephews Dr. Charles Ernest "Chug" Morton and Russell Farnsworth.
Pallbearer will be grandsons and nephews.
A visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 pm on Thursday, June 9, in the Doris Swang Chapel, Ezell Center, at Lipscomb University. A graveside service to celebrate a life beautifully lived will precede interment at Spring Hill Cemetery on Friday, June 10 at 10 am.
The family wishes to the wonderful nursing staff at St. Thomas West Hospital. Special appreciation is expressed to the caregivers from Whole Care, especially Mrs. Pat Allen, and the staff of Alive Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in her honor may be made to Inner City Ministry or to Lipscomb University.
