John C Sewell's Obituary
John Christian Sewell was born in Nashville June 25, 1931. He was the son of John Christian Sewell, Sr. and Pearl Victoria Sanders Sewell. A sister, Chloe Marie Sewell, was born a number of years before John was born. Chloe Marie lived less than a year having contracted scarlet fever and pneumonia. John's parents died when he was 7 years of age, 6 weeks apart. His father died suddenly on his mail route of a heart attack. His mother contracted pneumonia and expired 6 weeks following John's father's death.
Having been orphaned, the Lord looked after him well and he was provided a home by a wonderful Christian couple, Emory and Sallie Crump, in whose care he grew to manhood. John graduated from Freed-Hardeman College, David Lipscomb College, Vanderbilt University, and received the Doctor of Philosophy Degree from Baptist Christian University.
John served as minister of several Churches of Christ in the Nashville area as a young· man and preached full time for 8 and ½ years in the Carolinas, first in Georgetown, South Carolina and then in Charlotte, North Carolina with the Westside congregation. John regarded the fact that he had been instrumental in starting the
Carolina Children's Home during his tenure as a minister in the Carolinas as one of the high points of his service to his fell ow man.
John served as a Speech-Language Pathologist for 1 and ½ years with the Tennessee Department of Public Health and for 21 years with the Metropolitan Nashville-Davidson County Public Schools. From 1974 to 2007 John directed the work of Speech Pathology Associates, a private practice group. Disabled children and adults were served in great numbers with special emphasis being placed on meeting the needs of those who had developmental disabilities, had sustained strokes, traumatic brain injuries, and other neurological impairments resulting in communication deficits. John was dedicated to the patients he served.
John had been deeply involved in preparing lessons on the Old and New Testaments for a number of years and did this in conjunction with Landmark Publications,' Inc. It is his prayer that this work will continue to progress and be a blessing to thousands through the Board of Directors that governs the corporation.
Along with his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Jane Sewell and son-in-law that he regarded more as a son, Donald Glenn Croslin.
John is survived by his beloved daughter, Sharon Gayle Sewell Croslin and a beloved son; Emory Dale Sewell, and his beloved wife, Cindy. John is also survived by one grandson, Dale's son, Dylan Emory Andrew Sewell.
