John was the finest soul I met in Tennessee and will always be one of my top lifetime friends. His spirit and joy were amazing, lifting all who knew and loved him to happiness. He was also cherished by firefighters everywhere, hailed for his courage and wisdom and how he celebrated training and mentoring others. We have no idea how many lives John saved--I do know he helped me rebuild mine. John was also my top Vanderbilt colleague, caring so very much about our students there. He taught more than 1,000 of them from more than 30 nations how to handle any crisis, anywhere, at any time. Many have later said those lessons saved their careers and organizations. John left a wake of goodness that will spread to others forever. My best friend, a real buddy, a champion. Godspeed to his wonderful family and all who knew him.
