Joy Dora Christofferson's Obituary
Celebrating the Life of Joy Dora Christofferson
November 11th, 1927 – May 21st, 2026
We celebrate the beautiful life of Joy Dora Christofferson age 98 years young, born in L’Anse, Michigan. Her name matched her outlook, and every season of her life sparkled with warmth, energy, and purpose.
Armed with a master’s degree from Northwestern University, Joy poured her talent into being an educator. She taught at Litton High School for 2 years and then transferred to Pioneer Christian Academy where she taught from 1972 until closing in 2009. Math and computer classes were her specialty, and she looked forward to Pi Day each year. When a need arose, she gladly covered any subject—even a lesson on safe gun handling—because helping others learn made her happiest.
Away from the classroom, Joy found fun on the bowling lanes, golf course, and in campgrounds under open skies. Friends at the Donelson Fellowship knew her as a faithful lifelong member, while family knew her as an extraordinary cook who loved gathering everyone around the table.
Joy’s loving circle remains wide. She is reunited with her parents Arthur and Dora Salness; husband Robert Keith Christofferson Sr. of 57 years; daughter, Carol Gore; siblings, Paul Salness, Lloyd Salness and Jeanne Marshall; granddaughter Mistey Faye and great-grandchild Oakley. She is fondly remembered by her son Robert Keith Christofferson Jr.; son-in-law, Mike Gore; grandchildren: Sandra (Todd) Boone, Pamela Pelham, Hailey (Stephen) Hyde and Stormey Anna Maynard; great-grandchildren: Amberlynn, Christopher, Aaliyah, Sammey, Kelsey, Riley, Elizabeth Joy and Greyson; great-great grandchildren, Sadie Joy and one on the way – Oakland Harlan Hudson Hyde; who carry forward her spirit of curiosity and kindness.
Meals shared, lessons taught, and games played—these bright memories form Joy’s lasting gift. Let's honor her by growing closer with the Lord as it was her lifelong wish for those she loved to have a relationship with Jesus Christ; along with smiling at every moment she made richer and commit to keeping her love for learning and family at the center of our own lives.
