Ms. Katherine C. Houston's Obituary
Mrs. Sarah Katherine Frierson Cleggett Houston, was born January 4,1930 to the union of the late Charles Clifford Frierson and Katie Geneva Smith Frierson in Nashville Tennessee. Katherine's earthly journey ended on February 7th, 2022. She received her education in the metropolitan Nashville Davidson County School System whereupon she graduated from Pearl High School in 1948, Tennessee State University in 1952 and received her master's degree in 1979.
Katherine professed hope in Christ at an early age where her family attended Fairfield Missionary Baptist Church. She later joined the Pilgrim Emmanuel Baptist Church where she served faithfully until she joined Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Because of her servant spirit, she served in the lunch ministry.
Often demonstrated by her smile and laughter Katherine lived her life to the absolute fullest. Her zest for education and sports was phenomenal. She worked for many years for the Board of Parks and Recreation starting as a play leader and being elevated to district supervisor. She impacted many young people during her tenure at Napier Park and Watkins Park. She retired from Meharry Mental Health Cooperative. Being the sports enthusiast she was, at the age of 90 she was teaching golf.
Katherine was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Katie Frierson; brothers Charles E Frierson; James C Frierson (Velma); Sister Delores Brewer( William). She leaves memories of love to forever cherish with her daughter Deborah Brown (James); Grandson Braxton Sanford (Courtney); Great-granddaughter Brielle Sanford;Brother Gil Frierson; Friend Mattie Buford: a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and loved ones.
A Homegoing Celebration will be held for Katherine on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at 11am at Mount Zion Baptist Church (1112 Jefferson Street, Nashville, TN 37208) with the family receiving visitors an hour prior to the service.
