Mr. Kenneth Robert Murphy's Obituary
Kenneth R. (Red) Murphy - Age 85 of Nashville, originally from Toronto, Canada, passed away on January 1, 2021, after a lengthy battle with Dementia.
He was a devoted husband and beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Murphy and Elizabeth Murphy and six of his siblings. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sallye Gwyn Murphy; two sons, Kenny Murphy (Nancy) and Kelly Murphy (Michelle); three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; sister Lorna Owens (George) and brother Norm Murphy (Kay).
Ken was a professional ice hockey player in the Eastern Hockey League with the Charlotte Checkers from 1955 to 1961 and later with the Nashville Dixie Flyers, from 1962 to 1964, where he served as team captain. After his hockey career, he was a successful metal building contractor in Nashville with Murphy Sales Company, which he operated until his retirement in 2007.
His generous spirit and love for amateur athletics was always on display. In 1964 he was instrumental in starting the Nashville youth hockey league and in 1976, he helped found and coach Vanderbilt University’s club hockey team. Murphy Sales Company sponsored many sports teams through the years including hockey, baseball, football and softball.
There will be a private family graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Keepsake Village at The Hearth in Hendersonville, Alive Hospice or the charity of your choice.
