Mrs. LaDawn Irish Sherman's Obituary
LaDawn Irish Sherman, age 90, died on Dec. 12, 2014, in Nashville, TN. Born in Shawnee, Oklahoma, Mrs. Sherman graduated high school from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and she went on to graduate in 1946 from Vassar College where she studied Chemistry, German, and Psychology. Following graduation, she married West Point graduate Wade H. Pitts, Jr. at First Baptist Church of Muskogee, Oklahoma. Soon thereafter the Army stationed them in Anchorage, Alaska for three years. Subsequently, they were based in Milan, Tennessee and Joliet, Illinois. Upon leaving Army life, they moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where Mrs. Sherman lived for more than fifty years. Widowed in 1969, she married N. W. “Sunny” Sherman in 1972. Mrs. Sherman was an active member of Union Avenue Baptist Church and the P. E. O Sisterhood, an organization that seeks to provide educational opportunities for female students worldwide. She enjoyed bridge, needlepoint, knitting, painting, crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, and any activity that stimulated her uncommonly sharp mind. Mrs. Sherman moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 2007. She was predeceased by her two husbands; her daughter-in-law, Debbie Sherman Pitts; her mother, Irma Brown Irish; and her father, Guy Nathaniel Irish. She is survived by her son, W. Hampton Pitts (Michele Garner); her granddaughter Keely Irish Pitts-Leim (Joshua Leim); her two stepdaughters, Sheron Sherman and Alice Sherman McClary; her step-grandchildren, Jennifer Rosenblum, Cain McClary, and Dustin Kovacic; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be held in the chapel at First Baptist Church, Nashville at 3 pm on Sunday, Dec. 14 with visitation beginning at 2 pm. A simple graveside service will follow on Monday in Memphis at Memorial Park at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Union Avenue Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, Saint Thomas West Heart Institute in Nashville, Tennessee, or the Lupus Foundation of America.
