Lou Gennie "Lois" Betts Garrett's Obituary
Mrs. Lou Gennie “Lois” Betts Garrett, a graceful matriarch, passed away peacefully at home in Nashville, Tennessee, on December 7, 2024, at the age of 97. She was born on October 4, 1927, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, to the late Clarence and Tezzie Mae Betts.
Lois lived a life defined by devotion—to her faith, her family, and her calling as an educator. Lois’s passion for learning led her to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education from Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi, followed by two Master of Arts in Education degrees from Governors State University, Urbana Park, Ill., and Tennessee State University, Nashville, TN. While at Alcorn University, she also became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She shaped countless young lives during her 30-plus years as a dedicated teacher in the Chicago Public School system.
In addition to her lifelong dedication to education, Mrs. Lois Garrett was a woman of many talents and passions. She combined her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit by founding Angelic Daycare in her Nashville home, where she nurtured and guided countless young children with love and care. Beyond her work with children, Lois had a deep love for fashion and was celebrated for her elegant style. She especially adored designing hats, creating stunning, one-of-a-kind pieces that were as vibrant and unique as she was. As a licensed Milliner, her shop “Brims with Style” was frequented by the late Senator Thelma Harper who showcased her designs regularly. Whether she was teaching, caring for little ones, or showcasing her latest hat creations, Lois brought beauty, grace, and creativity to every endeavor, leaving a legacy of love and artistry that will be fondly remembered.
A woman of unwavering faith, Lois accepted Christ at an early age and began her spiritual journey at Sycamore Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Sherard, Mississippi. Her faith flourished in Chicago, where she became a pillar of Haven of Rest Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late John L. Conner. There, she faithfully served as a Deaconess, Sunday School teacher, treasurer, and secretary.
In 1985, Lois brought her servant’s heart to Nashville, joining her sister Prophetess Venerria Betts Smith at New Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She quickly found her niche as a beloved Adult Sunday School teacher where she served faithfully for over 20+ years and was a member of the Women’s Ministry.
Lois was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 55 years, Harry Garrett Sr.; her cherished son, Harry Randall Garrett, Jr; three sisters, Mamie Betts, Imogene Betts-Armstrong, and Lura Betts-Riley; and five brothers, Jack Betts, Clarence Betts, Joseph Betts, Leslie Betts, and Clyde Betts.
Her legacy lives on through her two adored sons and daughters-in-law, Dante (Carmen) Garrett and Angelo (Wendy) Garrett; her sisters, Katie (Noble) Betts Blackwell of New Jersey, and Venerria (Dr. Frederick) Betts Smith of Nashville, Tennessee; her four treasured grandchildren, Harry Garrett III, Rashaun Garrett, Jirah Skipper, and DiCarlo Brookens; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and beloved relatives and friends who will forever cherish her memory. In addition to her family, she is survived by her dear friend, Josephine Williams. Josephine's friendship brought immense comfort. They shared many days of laughter and joy.
Lois Garrett was a woman of elegance, strength, and quiet resilience. Her radiant faith, loving heart, and steadfast dedication to others leave a legacy that will be cherished by all who were blessed to know her. She will be remembered not only for the lives she touched but for the light she brought into the world.
