Lucille Cook Davis Handy's Obituary
HANDY, Lucille Cook; August 2, 2009. Born in Macon County, Tennessee to Wesley H. Cook and Lottie Deckard Cook who preceded her in death as did infant sister Inez. Also preceding her in death was her husband of forty-eight years, Ray T. Handy, her twin sister, Louise Cook Holmes, formerly of Madeira Beach, FL but recently returned to Nashville, and passed away earlier in July of 2009. Other family members who preceded her in death were her sister Glenn Cook Wilson (Harold) and brother, Cleon H. Cook (Geraldine). She graduated from Northern High School in Detroit, MI and the University of Tennessee. She began her career in retail merchandising at J.L. Hudson's Department Store in Detroit and joined Harvey's Department Stores in 1945. She moved from Buyer to Merchandising Manager and worked in that capacity until retiring in 1988 when the stores were sold. For many years she was a volunteer at Baptist Hospital. She was a confident and successful career and family woman long before such a thing was the norm. Her courage and independence continue to be an inspiration to all of her friends. She is survived by her four children, Patricia Davis Frye (Alton), McLean , VA; Paula Davis Leachman (Lamar), Myrtle Beach, SC; David Handy, Bradenton, FL; Michael H. Handy (Lu Anne), Sanford, NC; as well as by her nieces and nephews, Judy Wilson Bridwell (Bill), Goodlettsville, TN; Mandy Wilson McDougal (Dan), Lebanon, TN; and David L. Cook (Pat) of Hendersonville, TN. Also surviving are grandchildren Lisa Leachman Barrett (Jon), Charlotte, NC; Lori Leachman Solano (Hugo), Myrtle Beach, SC; W. Andrew Frye, Charlottesville, VA; Emily Frye, Falls Church, VA; Sarah-Faith Frye, McLean, VA; Christopher Handy (Jen) Ithaca, NY; Stephen Handy, Russellville, AR; and seven great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Woman's Club of Nashville and a long-time member of Woodmont Baptist Church. Private services were held at Spring Hill Cemetery.
