Lula Maie Counce Wood died peacefully with her family by her side on 1/13/2025
after a long illness. She was 96 years old.
She was preceded in death by her parents, JB (Jake) and Nola Cook Counce, husband of seventy
years, J. Donald Wood, and daughter, Jan Counce Wood. She is survived by her daughter,
Jill Wood Jarvis, and her grandson, Jarrett D. Jarvis, both of Hendersonville, TN.
Mrs. Wood’s early years were spent in Okolona, Mississippi, with the extended Cook family in the
rural farming community. After high school, she attended Blue Mountain Baptist College for
Women in Mississippi and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in education.
Her teaching career began after accepting a job at Ramer High School in Ramer Tennessee where
she met and married Donald Wood, also an educator. After a few years, the couple moved to
Adamsville, Tennessee, where Mr. Wood served as school principal and later, Superintendent for
McNairy County School District.
After moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 1960, she began teaching at Donelson High School. She
taught Literature and Grammer for the seventh, eighth, and nineth grades until her retirement in 1983, ending a career that spanned 33 years. While living in Donelson, Mrs. Wood was an active
member of Andrew Price Memorial United Methodist Church and volunteered her time to serving
others and her community.
After retirement and the loss of her husband, Mrs. Wood moved to Hendersonville, Tennessee to
be near her immediate family and enjoy her new grandson. There, she became a member of First
Baptist Church of Hendersonville.
Mrs. Wood received many awards and much recognition as an outstanding educator throughout
her career. The most telling evidence of her success is the continual contact, love, and
appreciation shown by her former students whom she taught throughout her career. Mrs. Wood
had the innate ability to connect with and show compassion, love, and concern for each student.
Mrs. Wood has touched many lives over the years.
She will be remembered for her unyielding dedication to her family as a Wife, Mother, and
Grandmother. Her love, care, and kindness were felt by all who knew
her and the many generations of lives she touched. Everyone who knew her loved her and everyone she knew, she loved. Unconditionally.
Visitation will be 9:00am Friday, January 17 at Spring Hill Funeral Home in Nashville, Tennessee. A
Celebration of Life S
ervice will follow at 12:00pm with Graveside Service immediately following.
