M. Ann McAllister's Obituary
Mercedes “Ann” McAllister age 85, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 surrounded by loved ones. Ann was born in Pittsburgh, PA, graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1948 and from Duquesne University with degrees in mathematics and French in 1952. She called Tennessee home for many years, raising her family in Knoxville and later moving to Nashville when advancing dementia eroded her independence. Family, friends, church and community were the focus of Ann’s life. Nothing gave her more joy than a house filled with friends, children and grandchildren, talking, laughing and enjoying her warm hospitality, delicious cooking and irresistible baking. “This is really good – if I might say so myself” she’d say with a twinkle. It sure was good, Mom. A loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and great grandmother – she fulfilled all these roles with grace and good sense, joy and laughter and sometimes tears. She was always so proud of her kids and grandkids and supportive of all their endeavors. A kind and compassionate friend – she was always available with an ear to listen or hand to help. A dedicated and generous volunteer – she gave her personal touch in service with the Ladies of Charity Ministries, Meals on Wheels, Charity Cabs, and others. Ann was preceded in death by her parents William Bennett McShane and Mercedes Frances McShane and husband John T McAllister. She is survived by her two sons John T McAllister Jr. (Jill), James McAllister (Nancy); four daughters, Nancy McAllister Sheridan, Janet McAllister (Tom Morris), Marianne King, Eileen McAllister; sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and three brothers, James McShane (Rose Marie), William McShane (Ruth), John McShane (Nancy). Her family will miss her greatly. So will her long-term caregiver Juanita Meadows, to whom the family expresses deep gratitude, and special family friends Austin Moseley and Peggy and Judy Meadows. Visitation with the family in Nashville will be Tuesday, December 27th, 2016 at Spring Hill Funeral Home from 5-8 pm with a Rosary Service starting at 7 pm and again on Wednesday December 28th, 2016 from 1-2 pm at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, with a Funeral Mass to follow at 2 pm. Graveside services will be at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville on Thursday, December 29th, 2016 at 2:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Ladies of Charity in Ann’s memory. Arrangements by Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery “Where Nashville comes to Remember”.
