Margreete Gayle Sweeney Johnston's Obituary
JOHNSTON, Margreete Gayle Sweeney of Nashville, on February 8, 2013 age 93. Born July 11, 1919, to Howell and Eustacia Ellis Sweeney. Preceded in death by husband, Joseph Theodore Johnston; sisters, Anita Sweeney Tucker and Frances Sweeney Brandon. Survived by daughter, Dr. Margreete G. Johnston (son-in-law Dr. Bill Doak), grandsons, Robert Joseph Derveloy IV of Chattanooga, and William Ellis Doak; son, Joseph Howell Johnston (daughter-in-law Mada Patterson); cousin Avalene Ellis Cass; nieces, Eustacia Brandon Moffett and Marilyn Tucker; nephews Greg Tucker and Carl Brandon; and numerous grand-nieces and -nephews. Mrs. Johnston was graduated from East High School and received a B.A. degree from Peabody College. She taught fourth grade in Nashville public schools. She and her husband were founding members of the Greater Nashville Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Bellevue in the 1990s. Her activities included gardening, which she last did on a large scale in her extensive wildflower garden in Oak Ridge; she studied birds and trees; painted in watercolor; and was enthusiastic about politics. She was a gentle woman whose beautiful smile and compassionate interest in others caused all to love her. She will be sorely missed. The family is thankful for the care provided by Dr. Julia Gomez and more recently by her caregivers at Richland Place and from Alive Hospice. A service of remembrance will be held on February 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel at Spring Hill, 5110 Gallatin Pike, with the Reverend Dr. Dan Rosemergy officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Interment will be private.
