Mrs. Mary Lou Alexandra Coleman's Obituary
Mary Lou Alexandre Parker Coleman, 86, known as Alex, of Nashville, TN, passed away on Dec. 17, 2019 after a battle with cancer.
Alex was born on April 12, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Rev. Louis Alexander Parker and Mary Stallknecht Parker. She attended school in Vicksberg, Mississippi and graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in sociology.
After graduation, Alex lived in New Orleans with her parents and moved to New York to work at Cornell Medical School. The Bishop of Louisiana introduced her to a young seminary student named Edwin Coleman, and they were married in 1954.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years Rev. Edwin C. Coleman, who said, “It was a promise kept—each for the other, both for God. They had four children: Todd, Parker, Mary & Stuart. After living in Atlanta, GA, the couple and their four kids moved to Charleston, SC.
In 1985, Alex and Ed moved to Nashville, TN. Alex was a voracious reader and was actively involved in her book club and Petite Salon.
Alex is predeceased by her parents Rev. & Mrs. Louis A. Parker. She is survived by her husband Rev. Edwin C. Coleman; four children Edwin Cabiness Coleman, Jr. (Todd), John Parker Coleman, Mary Alexandra Coleman and Stuart Holmes Coleman; and five grandchildren Coleman Cubison Butts, Caroline Butts Ban (Callie), Alexandra DeMoss-Campbell, Sarah Jane Coleman and Guy Coleman. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her. Her memorial Service will be held on Sun., Dec. 29, at Christ Church Cathedral at 1:30pm, followed by inurnnment at St. George’s Episcopal Church.
