Mason Herbert Collins' Obituary
Mason Herbert Collins was born in Detroit, Michigan, and carried a welcoming spirit through every season of his 85 years. Loyal, honest, resilient, kind, and compassionate, he was outgoing and friendly and truly never met a stranger. Those qualities shone bright until he passed in Hermitage, Tennessee, leaving memories that feel like warm sunshine.
Mason proudly served his country in the US Army as a medic. He was stationed in Germany during the same time as Elvis Presley. After his time in the Army, he continued his medical work as a technician at Vanderbilt and Donelson Hospital, finally retiring from Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute.
Music set the soundtrack of Mason’s life. Saturday nights found him and his wife, Wilma, dancing at American Legion Post 88, showing off moves to “Uptown Funk” or cheering for the house band, Powerplay. R&B, rock, and especially Elvis tunes filled both his home and his big heart.
A proud sports fan, Mason’s cheers for the UT Vols and the Tennessee Titans echoed every game day. He enjoyed every play and loved sharing that excitement with family and friends.
Summer meant fresh air on the lakes of Middle Tennessee. Mason spent many happy afternoons boating with his sons, soaking in the easy pace of the water and the closeness of family time.
Holidays were his favorite gatherings, especially Christmas and Thanksgiving when kids and grandkids filled the house with laughter. Whether offering an extra helping of food or a listening ear, Mason lived his motto by always asking, “Can I get you something?” and making sure everyone felt welcome.
Today we celebrate a life lived with music, sports, open arms, and steady love. Mason leaves a legacy of simple kindness and joyful moments that will keep inspiring all who knew him.
Those who have passed on before him are his parents, Herbert and Dorothy Collins.
Those left behind to cherish the memory of his laughter are his loving wife of 44 years, Wilma, children, Michael Benton, Alan (Amber) Collins, Jason (Kelly) Collins, Chris (Megan) Benton, Steven (Angel) Collins, 10 grandchildren: Jeffrey, Logan, Riley, Ryan, Gage, Haley, Jaden, Cameron, Spencer, and JT, brothers, Gerry (Linda) Collins and Dennis (Debra) Collins, nieces and nephews, and close friend, Denny Follis.
