Norma Joyce Barnes' Obituary
Norma Joyce Barnes went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 14, 2024. She was born on August 8, 1930, as Norma Joyce Martin on the Six Nations Indian Reservation in Ohsweken, Ontario, Canada. She was affectionately known as "Joyce". Her childhood was spent on the reservation and in Niagara Falls, New York. Joyce and her first spouse Charles W. Maracle (d.) had three children. Joyce later re-married her soulmate, Charles J. (Chuck) Barnes (d.), in New York in 1958 and they had three children. When Chuck was assigned to Scott AFB IL, they moved their family to Highland IL where they raised their three children. Joyce is survived by her six children, Brenda Hustedde, Bonnie (Scotty) Harris, Robin (Ilona) Maracle, Pamela (Todd) Tafelski, George "Tommy" Barnes, and Penny (Mark) Small.
In their early years together, Joyce was a homemaker and then earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Social Sciences from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in 1985. After Chuck retired, they moved to Hendersonville, TN, where Joyce worked as a social worker with the Sumner County Health and Human Services until her retirement. She attended Cornerstone Church in Madison, TN where she was an active member of the choir, the Keenager group, the Teen Challenge program, and prayer groups. Joyce also enjoyed mission trips to Mexico and Africa. During her spare time, she was a volunteer advisor at Centennial Hospital. She continued to attend her beloved church services, thanks to her grandson Chris Frisse and his wife Donna. Joyce deeply cared for others. She loved to pray for whoever asked her, as she let everyone know that she was a prayer warrior. She remained fiercely independent and brave, as she faced the challenges of old age.
She truly cherished all of her surviving eleven grandchildren: Shana (Chris) Adams, Chris (Donna) Frisse, Mike (Kristian) Frisse, Matt (Kim) Radford, Erin Radford, Bethany (Michael) Agnello, Stacey (Dan) Zhano, Stephanie (John) Figueroa, Valerie Barnes, Tom Barnes, Matt Tafelski, and Benjamin Harwood, as well as twelve great-grandchildren. She was known and loved as "Gigi" to the entire family. She is also survived by her siblings Carol (Dominic) Sardina, and Tricia (Joe) Hise.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Charles Barnes (1990), granddaughter Jennifer Brannen, grandson Adam Tafelski, great-grandchild Gabriel Maldonado, brother William M. Martin, and sister-in-law Gretchen LaRue Martin.
A visitation will be held on Friday, July 12th, 2024, from 10:00 until 11:00 in the morning, with a memorial service to follow from 11:00-12:00 at Cornerstone Church in Madison, Tennessee. All are welcome. To view the livestreamed service, please visit https://www.cornerstonenashville.org/
Joyce will be placed to rest after the service with her husband at Nashville National Cemetery at 1:00 in the afternoon. Those wishing to attend the committal at Nashville National Cemetery are advised to meet directly there at 12:45 PM; we will not be going in procession.
