Phyllis Maddox Watson's Obituary
Phyllis Maddox Watson, 89, of Purcellville, VA died peacefully in her sleep on January 3, 2024. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Watson, Sr. and brothers Cordell “Grub” Maddox and James "Jim” Maddox. Phyllis is survived by her daughter Elaine Nauta (Pieter), stepson Charles Watson, Jr. (Ann), four grandchildren, Jessica Nauta (Alex Durie), Mark Nauta, Jonah Watson (Liz), David Watson, brother Sidney Maddox, sister Fayann Moore and 12 nephews and nieces.
Phyllis was born in LaGrange, GA to Jesse and Esther Maddox. After graduating from LaGrange High School in 1952 she attended Mercer University, earning a BA in Education. She later earned her Masters of Education from Peabody University. She taught elementary school for over 30 years in the Nashville Public School System. She was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church of Nashville, First Baptist Church of Madison and Grace Baptist Church of Madison.
Phyllis was a strong and generous woman of faith. She was devoted to her family and was a devout Christian. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, a friendly game of cards (which she usually won) and helping out wherever she was needed. She always had a kind word and a friendly smile for everyone. She raised her daughter, Elaine as a single mom, was devoted to her husband, Charles and lived a full life for 11 years after experiencing a stroke.
Although she lived her final years with her daughter and son in law in Purcellville, VA, she loved Nashville and will return there to be reunited with her husband in their final resting place.
The family cordially invites relatives and friends to visit on Friday, January 12, 2024, from eleven o'clock in the morning until the time of the funeral service at twelve o'clock noon at Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery, 51110 Gallatin Road in Nashville. The committal service will immediately follow.
She will be missed by her many family and friends but is now at peace with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
