Richard Steven Briggs' Obituary
Richard Steven Briggs, age 80, of Hendersonville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee. Steve was born on November 16, 1945, in Nashville to the late Bruce and Mildred Briggs.
In 1967, while attending Belmont College, Steve met the love of his life, Beverly. After only a few months of dating, the couple married in November of that same year. Steve and Beverly both graduated from Belmont in 1968 and went on to share nearly 58 years of marriage, until Beverly’s passing last fall.
Steve devoted his career to education and coaching, teaching history and geography and coaching middle and high school football and basketball. He also could be found refereeing and umpiring games at Drakes Creek and other local parks. Outside of the classroom, he found great joy in planting flowers and vegetables, especially his tomatoes. He was known for his love of history, storytelling, and meaningful conversation. Steve was always the most positive and uplifting person and was especially known for his quotes and sayings.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beverly, and his son in law, Paul Mayberry.
Those left to cherish his memory include his three children: Jeff Briggs (Rebecca), Kim Mayberry, and Michael Briggs (Zollie); seven grandchildren: Matthew Mayberry, Jonathan Mayberry, Andrew Mayberry, Nicolas Mayberry, Ada Briggs, Ellie Briggs, and Cooper Briggs; two great grandchildren, Aspen Mayberry and Briggs Mayberry; brother, David (Patricia) Briggs along with many friends and extended family members.
