Mr. Robert A. Shumate's Obituary
Robert Allen Shumate age 82 of Madison, retired building contractor, died peacefully, and with dignity, on February 15, 2014, in his old log house, after extended health issues. Preceded in death by parents, Charles and Priscilla Shumate, sisters, Susan Shumate and Grace Aker, brother, Charles Shumate, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Beulah Ann Morgan Shumate; daughters, Elaine and Phillip Draper of Madison, TN, and Robbie and Gerry McMahon of Cottontown, TN; grandchildren, Trey and Becky Howell, Travis Howell, G.T. McMahon, Priscilla McMahon, Matt Draper, James Draper; great grandchildren, Billy Cooper, Brooks And Lincoln Howell and Trent Draper. He graduated from Hume Fogg Technical Vocational High School in 1950, majoring in Art. He served two years in the United States Air Force as Airman/Firstr Class with the 118th Recognizance Technical Unit during the Korean Conflict. He worked with his father at Shumate Commercial Photo Service for 10 years prior to entering the real estate and construction field. After building several large apartment complexes, he was Director of Construction, building Shoney’s and Captain D’s restaurant chains throughout the southeast. He opened Shumate Construction and Development Company, Inc. in 1979 and retired his license in 1996. Robert was a member of the Madison Church of Christ, the Tennessee Ten Hunting Club, and Mid-TN Antique Car Club. Prior to health issues, he was an avid golfer, fisherman, and antique collector. Despite his many personal and professional accomplishments, his heart and life revolved around his family. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at 11:00am at Spring Hill Funeral Home with Russ King, minister of Donelson Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Historic Spring Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Tuesday, February 18, 2014 from 4:00 until 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Active pallbearers will be Trey, Travis, Billy Howell, G.T. McMahon, Matt and James Draper, Rod Lilly, Walter Morgan, Jr., Edward Sloan, David and Alan Hardy, and Tracy Townsend. Honorary pallbearers will be elders and deacons of Madison Church of Christ, cousins and close family friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the Madison Church of Christ Flood Recovery Fund or Hospice Home Health Care. The family wishes to thank Dottie, Margie, Natalie, Keri. Hospice Home Health Care Staff including, Chante’, Gina and Janie and Dr. Kenneth Dozier and staff. Arrangements have been entrusted to Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery.
