Shirley Sue Hornsby of Nashville, TN passed away on July 21, 2020 in Davidson County. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Robert John Hornsby; her parents, Wade Odell Hudgens and Flossie Perry Hudgens; one sister, Elise Hunt; three brothers, J.F. Hudgens, Wade Odell Hudgens JR, Billy Alfred Hudgens; and her grandson, Travis Flythe.
She is survived by her son, Benjamin Hornsby (Rebecca); her daughter, Susan Flythe (Edward Gray); four grandchildren, Emily Sleister (Ambrose), Christopher Hornsby, Missy Flythe, Kelly Flythe; five great-grandchildren, Travis Powers, Ethan Powers, Levi Powers, Jaxon Powers, Phillip Tonski; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley married a young airman, after a whirlwind romance, right after high school. They spent the next twenty years traveling around the country and the world. When Bob retired from the military, they settled down only a few miles from where they married to be near her family. Shirley had a heart for the elderly, especially those who were ill. She was a volunteer at Alive Hospice, where she also passed away, and at Skyline Hospital in Nashville spending over 500 hours caring for those most vulnerable.
Shirley also cherished time with family—her mother, brothers and sister and nieces and nephews, Sunday meals with her son and his children and trips to Hampton to spend time with her daughter, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved life, music, animals, fishing, the beach and trying new things. Shirley enjoyed sweets and play, working puzzles and games. She was strong-willed and strong in her beliefs and was an inspiration to those who knew her well. Shirley will truly be missed.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 28, 2020 from 9-11 am at Spring Hill Funeral Home 5110 Gallatin Road, Nashville, TN 37216. 615-865-1101. A Celebration of Life Funeral Ceremony will take place immediately after at 11 am. In accordance with local public health guidelines, a maximum of 25 people at a time are allowed inside during the visitation and service. Masks are required, and temperature and health screening will be administered prior to admittance. She will be buried alongside her husband, Robert, at the Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, Pegram, TN. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Alive Hospice .
