Sue Dunnebacke Gunn's Obituary
A Life Rooted in Love – Sue Matthews Dunnebacke Gunn
May 29th, 1933 – February 16th, 2026
Sue’s story is first and always about family. She carried the love of her late parents, Irby Gibson Matthews and Corinne Reeves Matthews, close to her heart and spent every day trying to pass that same care forward.
Born in Nashville, TN, Sue grew up with a steady sense of faith that never left her. She found a church home early and kept it for life. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
For more than forty years, Sue served as secretary at Saint Andrews United Methodist Church. Friends there remember her steady hand, quick smile, and the way she quietly kept everything on track. She easily kept friends from grade school until death. Later in life, Sue worked for Department of Tourism, giving information to visitors on places, events, and activities in the Nashville area.
She loved spending time with friends, family and attending church events. She loved attending children’s baseball, basketball, soccer, football, and games. She stayed active, tending her flower garden and logging her daily walks at River Gate Mall even into retirement.
Sue’s life was shared with two devoted husbands. She married Douglas Howard Dunnebacke in 1950; he unfortunately passed away in 1988. She later married Billy Clayton Gunn in 1994 and he also unfortunately passed away in 2014. She now joins both in rest. Her two sons-in-law preceded her death, William “Bill” Knox and John “Jay” West. She was a proud mom to Diane West, Gina Knox, Kevin (Audrey) Dunnebacke, and Mike (Gillie) Gunn, and she treasured every moment of being a grandmother to five grandchildren, Scott (Chandler) Knox, Chandler (Laura) Knox, Austyn (Lauren) Dunnebacke, Casen (August) Dunnebacke and Andrea West Doll; eleven great-grandchildren, Abby, Aubrey, Maddie, Lily, Maddox, Brooklyn, Liam, Ryker, Peyton, Josh, Jagger and one on the way.
Sue was currently a member of Connell United Methodist Church. Family would like to extend a special gratitude of appreciation to the members of Connell for continuous remembrances throughout the past 3 years. Another special thank you to the staff at NHC Sumner Place for their continued love and support shown to our mom, Sue.
We will remember Sue for the gentle way she made each person feel like family. We carry her warmth with us and say goodbye for now, knowing her love keeps shaping our own.
