Thelma Joy Hicks' Obituary
Thelma Joy Hicks passed away March 29, 2025. She was born to Shelah and Amby Gerdellie Thomas on Sept. 3, 1942, in Woodbury, Tn. She married the love of her life Dan Roy Hicks on Nov. 1, 1958, to whom she was married for 53 years. She moved to Nashville after graduating from high school in 1959.
Thelma and Dan raised three children Michael Raymond Hicks (Beth), Rene Hicks Osborne (Mike), Brian Odell Hicks (Nikki). She leaves behind her four grandchildren Mo Murrie (formerly Michelle Osborne) and spouse Susanna, Todd Osborne (Mary), Brenna and Daniel Hicks. She also leaves 2 great grandchildren Kit Osborne and Mae Murrie.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents and her husband and her siblings, Ray, Alan, Arlis, Lucille, Mazel, Nadine and Agnes.
Thelma was known as Tootie to her beloved nieces and nephews and many old friends. She was Thelma to new friends. She was a mother and a homemaker involved in the things her children were involved in. She was a den mother in Cub Scouts and a troop leader in Girl Scouts. She was involved in PTA and as a room mother in her children’s classes. She loved to travel and play board games, Mexican Train Dominoes being one of her favorites. The Great Smoky Mountains were a favorite destination of her and Dan.
Thelma held several jobs as her children got older. She was a crossing guard, worked at KMart and was a Driver’s License examiner. She took a break from work to take care of her mother-in-law for five years. She later worked at Walmart for 18 years. She loved the people she worked with at the Charlotte Pike Walmart. She retired to take care of Dan. She lovingly took care of him as he had Alzheimers Disease.
Thelma loved her Victory Sunday School Class and Tuesday Morning Ladies Bible Study at Nashville First Church of the Nazarene. She was an active participant in both and loved learning about Jesus.
There will be a family burial at Pleasant View Cemetery in Woodbury, TN.
A Celebration of Life will be held at First Church of the Nazarene, 510 Woodland St, Nashville, TN 37206 Saturday May 3, 2025, at 11 am. Visitation will begin at 10 am.
A private family burial will take place in Woodbury, TN at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Church of the Nazarene Faith Promise or Alive Hospice 1718 Patterson Street, Nashville, TN 37203
