Mrs. Virginia Elizabeth Byington's Obituary
Virginia Elizabeth Davidson Byington passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, after a brief illness, surrounded by family in the Alive Hospice Residence, which she helped found. She lived her life in humble service to others and in a deep devotion to her Heavenly Father, serving as an Associate of the Sisters of Mercy. A woman whose passion for her children and grandchildren showed in her every action, Virginia just loved people. She recently lived in the Maybelle Carter Retirement Community where every person she met became a friend. In nursing for 60 years, Virginia loved pediatrics, then moved to the Metro Nashville Public Health Department, and after her husband’s illness in 1983, joined Alive Hospice of Nashville as their second nurse. Virginia cared for AIDS and cancer patients for 20 years and ended her life receiving the gift of compassion from Hospice that she had given others. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melville Rhoten Byington. She is survived by her daughters Teresa Safford and Nora (Ed) Moulton, and her sons Melville (Harriett) Byington, Jr., and Michael (Tommye) Byington. Grandchildren: Bobby Safford, Jack Safford, Joey Safford, Kimberly Moulton, Amy Moulton, Steve (Rena) Byington, Jerry (Lynne) Byington, Mitzi (Reed) Lovell, John (Cara) Byington, Stacey (Chris) Wynn, Emily (Chris) O’Keefe, and several great-grandchildren. Family will see friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, at Spring Hill Funeral Home with the Rosary beginning at 5 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 1, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Joe McMahon, Celebrant. Active pallbearers will include Bobby, Jack and Joey Safford, Ed Moulton, Bob Safford and Steve Byington. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson Ave, Nashville, TN, 37203.
